Christmas this year

Christmas_tree_2

Thank you to each and every one of you who shared with us on the blog this week about your December 26th plans! Your comments were so much fun to read, and I really enjoyed finding out what you all had planned for the day. See the end of this post for winners!

Our plans were really scattered this year...we typically stay at home for the holidays and have everyone at our house; however, this year was a little bit different. We traveled to Roseburg, OR (which is about 3 hours south of here) to visit my mom and step dad on Christmas Eve. One thing you should know...my mom is a fantastic cook, and spends days baking the most wonderful treats for Christmas.

Chocolate_pretzels

Peanut butter balls anyone? Chocolate dipped pretzels?

Chocolate_fudge

Frosted sugar cookies? Pecan tarts? Gingerbread cookies? Fudge?

Pecan_tarts_2

My mom bakes these goodies and so much more each and every Christmas, and I swear that I gain 5 pounds just by eating these treats on this one day...I justify this by reminding myself how fun these pounds were to gain. It's completely worth it! :)

On Christmas afternoon we then drove to Bandon, OR on the coast to visit my MIL and Woolboy's step dad. They live in one of the most beautiful locations, in a quaint little house that sits amongst the forest. Just check out these cute steps she has created (which lead to a full on trail through the forest right in her own backyard- which she also created). It's like something you would see in a landscaping book each and every time we visit - just amazing!

Steps_at_jeans

Jean_steps_2

And this park photo? Oh, right, it's not a park, it's my MIL's yard! She is quite amazing!

Jean_yard_3

We enjoyed a glazed ham, cheesy scalloped potatoes, green bean salad, pumpkin pie, blueberry pie, and all sorts of other yummy goodness. My MIL then opened the Lagoon (sport weight sock yarn from Sundara) socks I knit her for Christmas...they look so cute on her, don't they?

Jean_socks

This is some of the sock yarn I had gotten way back when Sundara was dyeing lots of one-time-only colorways - and I had gotten lots of this colorway. Lots and lots and lots. It was one of my favorites and still is, but unfortunately is no longer available.

We then spent the day after Christmas (Boxing Day!) sleeping in, relaxing, and enjoying a family visit with my MIL. No shopping! Not that I didn't want to or would not have been willing to, as I LOVE shopping on any day of the year, but there isn't much shopping available on the South Coast and we were doing so good at relaxing...why ruin a good thing, right? :)

Yesterday we returned home and we plan to do a little catching up on store business - a little inventory, filling orders, ordering more yarn for the shop, answering email, etc. I plan to work on a few knitting projects this weekend, visit with some friends, catch up on some much needed cleaning...and will try to get some relaxing in before the New Year begins, if that is possible!

Happynewyear

Speaking of the New Year and new shop business, we have a few things to mention....

1. First of all, we want to announce a couple of winners of the recent blog contest.

Chestnut

The winner of the "Chestnuts Roasting" contest (and July was the correct month for inquiring minds who want to know...) is Melissa! Congrats! Melissa has won 2 skeins (enough for a pair of socks) of the Chestnut's Roasting colorway from the Unique Sheep, a matching stitch marker, and some of these fantastic oversized Reese's Peanut Butter cup trees.

The winners of the "Boxing Day" contest are Dawn and Isobel. Congrats to both of you! I will be contacting you both sometime today regarding your winning loot!

2. Secondly, we will be having a sale starting January 4th, which will continue through January 20th. Check back with us Monday, December 31st to find out a list of the yarns that will be included in the sale. This sale will include lots of opportunity to get some great after holiday shopping deals!

3. Also on Monday, I will announce how you can go about signing up for the 2008 Woolgirl Sock Club, which will open up for registrations on January 1st.

4. Our January newsletter will also be emailed out on Monday, so watch your emails for that!

5. We will be at the TNNA show in California on January 10th - 13th, checking out lots of new yarns and products for the shop, so any orders placed during that time period will be shipped on January 14th. We would also love to get your feedback in the next few weeks on which yarns and/or products YOU would like to see in the shop in 2008! We have found some of our most favorite yarns because of you, our customers, so we would love to hear your thoughts and ideas. Which yarns do you wish we would carry? Do you have favorites needles or bags you would like us to know about? We would love to hear your thoughts and typically will offer you a gift certificate if we end up carrying that particular product in the shop, so send us your ideas!

Lmtin

6. We will have a shop update this Sunday, featuring new colorways from Lavender Sheep, lace and sock yarns from Oceanwind Knits, and fantastic products from Heal My Hands.

Happy Friday to everyone, and have a wonderful weekend!

Boxing Day?

Boxing_day

In a few countries, including the UK, Canada, and Australia, today is Boxing Day. What's Boxing Day? Well, it started in the UK about 800 years ago in the middle ages. On this day, Alms boxes were opened and the money distributed to the poor of the community. Some churches still have Alms boxes and still uphold the tradition of opening them on Boxing Day. So, much to contrary belief, Boxing Day doesn't actually have anything to do with the sales that are so prevalent on December 26th or the number of boxes we recycle on this day. Ha!

In fact, Boxing Day isn't the only holiday that is celebrated on December 26th...in South Africa this day is known as "The Day of Goodwill." In the Bahamas this day is known as "Junkanoo." Some of us call this day "National Whiner's Day" or Bah Humbug Day. And you may not know this, but December 26th is also known as National Candy Cane Day!

So many different meanings for this one day of the year, who would have guessed it? So, to make things a little fun, instead of a contest, we'd like to hear from you about what YOU have planned for today. Do you celebrate National Boxing Day? Are you out perusing the sale racks for some after holiday sales? Are you kicking back and enjoying some movies in your pajamas? Whatever it is, we'd love to hear your about your day!

Out of the comments that are left before Friday morning, we'll choose 2 winners...winners will each receive a skein of sock yarn from the shop, along with a 20% coupon for some after holiday shopping at Woolgirl!

Happy 26th of December!

Happy Holidays!

Happyholidaystuxthumb

Happy Holidays to everyone out there who might happen to be reading today! :) I wish each and every one of you a wonderful Christmas, Hanukkah, or other holiday you may be celebrating this year!

I will be out this week on holiday, and will return on Saturday (December 29th), so if you place an order this week, please note that it will not be shipped until this Saturday.

We will have our last Christmas contest this Wednesday, and at that time will announce the winner of the Chestnuts Roasting contest last week!

Happy Holidays!

Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire

Chestnuts_roasting_sport_up_close

"Chestnuts roasting on an open fire
Jack Frost nipping at your nose
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir
And folks dressed up like Eskimos..."

Everybody knows this song, right? It's the ever popular "The Christmas Song", written in 1945 by Mel Torme and turned into a popular Christmas song by Nat "King" Cole in 1946. Today there are so many versions of the song, you've probably heard it in various forms by a variety of artists. The truth is, though, the original version is always the best, and in this case, it's so true!

So what's all the fuss about chestnuts anyway? Here are a few things you might NOT know about them...

1) Chestnuts are most likely the first food every eaten by man.

Chestnut_tree

2) Chestnuts contain twice as much starch as potatoes. Really?  In fact, chestnut trees are often given the nickname "the bread tree."

3) Chestnut trees can live up to 500 years. WOW!

4) Chestnuts are referred to more as a vegetable rather than a nut.

Chestnuts2

5) It is highly advisable to NOT eat a chestnut raw.  In fact, chestnuts must really be roasted (just like the song mentions!) or boiled first, due to the high levels of tannic acid.

6) The photo shown at the beginning of this post is actually our Chestnuts Roasting colorway from The Unique Sheep. Isn't it gorgeous?

Now isn't that more than you ever really wanted to know about chestnuts?

Well, almost...and this leads us to the contest question of the week! When
Mel Torme was writing this song in 1945, which month did he write it in? Do you know the answer to this question? If so, you could win the following...

- 2 skeins (enough for a pair of socks) of the Chestnuts Roasting colorway from The Unique Sheep.

Chestnuts_roasting_fingering_weight

- A matching stitch marker from Spindle Cat Studio and

- Several King-sized Reese's "Double the Peanut Butter" Christmas trees (because I just found these the other day and want to share the chocolate love this Christmas!)

Reeses_tree2

I can't wait to see your answers! A winner will be announced this Friday on the blog...

And we have some other announcements to make.

1) Yes, the original sponsor of Rudolph was GE! That one was too easy, wasn't it? :) The winner of the Rudolph contest last week was Carrie! Congrats Carrie! I have contacted you via email regarding your winnings! :)

2) We are also going to be drawing names from all of the photos that were submitted for the Fall Sock Contest soon, so I will be posting those winners sometime next week. Each winner will receive a fun gift box from Woolgirl!

3) We will have our last Christmas contest next Wednesday, the day after Christmas, so be sure to stop by and say hello! Can you believe it's almost 2008? The winner will receive a Woolgirl gift certificate...for fun, fun, fun after Christmas shopping!

4) We will have an "
After Christmas Sale" starting in January on select yarns, and I will post more details about that next Friday, December 28th.

5) The Woolgirl Sock Club will open for sign-ups beginning January 1st. Details will be listed here on the blog in the next week or so.

6) The last day to place an order and have it arrive to you by Christmas (for US customers only) is today (Wednesday, December 19th). After that, we really can't promise that it will arrive by Christmas (however, we will do our best if you absolutely need it by then). :)

And I will leave you today with this simple phrase....

"Although it's been said many times many ways, Merry Christmas to you."

Happy Wednesday!

December 12, 2007

And Rudolph was his name...

Rudolph_kelly_yarn

Today is all about Rudolph....because what would Christmas time be without Rudolph? I mean, when you think back to your childhood memories of Christmas, doesn't Rudolph come to mind? And who else could lead Santa to your house each year to deliver those packages down the chimney?

Rudolph5

Curious about where Rudolph actually came from? Did you know that Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer was actually created in 1939 by a 34 year old copywriter named Robert L. May? Robert came up with a poem about a misfit reindeer at the request of his employer, Chicago based Montgomery Ward, for a Christmas story they could use as a promotional gimmick.

Wow! I had no idea!

Flying_reindeer

And where does this notion of flying reindeer come from anyway? Well, it has been said that the reindeer probably came from stories of the Norse God Woden who rode through the sky with reindeer and 42 ghostly huntsmen. Clement Moore's famous poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas (Twas the Night Before Christmas) sealed the image of Santa Claus, his reindeer and the magical flying sleigh loaded with sacks of presents.

Rudolph has become such a phenomenon that is has become the longest running, highest rated television special in the history of television. Of course, we know the 2nd longest running - we found that out last week! :)  How Rudolph came to be on television has a long history - do you know which company provided the funding to start this ever so popular Christmas show? In fact, many of the original ads for the show were sponsored by this company - with their name listed at the top of the ads. Do you know which company this is?

Get this question right, and you're on your way to winning a fun Rudolph prize this week. Wanna have a guess at what it is? Did you see the fun red yarn at the beginning of this post? Well, this is one of the prizes in store for this weeks winner! This is a special yarn dyed from Kelly at The Unique Sheep (formerly Liisu Yarns), and check out the gorgeous socks she knit with this yarn....WOW!

Rudolph_socks_web

There will be a couple of other little things in your package if you are the winner this week - Christmas themed items, of course! I look forward to your responses! :)

Ch, Ch, Charlie Brown Wednesday!

Charlie_brown_tree

It's a Charlie Brown Christmas Wednesday! I love Charlie Brown ALOT (if you haven't already noticed with all of the Charlie Brown things going on around here!) and I thought that today's contest would be the perfect opportunity to celebrate the Charlie Brown Christmas theme!

Some fun Charlie Brown Christmas facts...

1. Did you know that the actors (the voices behind Charlie Brown and the gang) were all children and learned most of their lines phonetically, often without knowing what they meant?

2. CBS didn't originally want to run the show, as there wasn't any "canned laughter" in it. They were pleasantly surprised to see such wonderful ratings!

3. There are many biblical references throughout the film (which CBS also didn't want to include, but Charles M. Schulz felt should be included, as no one else on television was doing this at the time).

4. Charlie Brown Christmas is the 2nd longest running Christmas special on US network television. Do you know what the longest running Christmas special is? Rudolph!

Charliebrownchristmas

5. Some memorable quotes from Charlie Brown Christmas...

Charlie Brown: "Good Grief!"
Charlie Brown: "Oh brother!"
Charlie Brown: "Pig-Pen, you're the only person I know who can raise a cloud of dust in a snowstorm."

Charlie Brown: "I've killed it! Oh, everything I touches gets ruined!"

Lucy: "Snoopy, you'll have to be all the animals in our play. Can you be a sheep?"
Snoopy: "Baaaa"

Violet: "Boy, are you stupid, Charlie Brown."

Charlie Brown: "Rats! Nobody sent me a Christmas card today!"

Charlie_brown_christmas

This week is a fun one in terms of contest prizes. The winner of this week's Charlie Brown Christmas contest will win a few fun Charlie Brown things I have found while out shopping (which will remain a secret until the winner receives the package!), along with one of the cute Charlie Brown Christmas sock accessory bags from ZigZag Stitches that we had in the Charlie Brown Christmas kits, some wonderful Charlie Brown hot cocoa, and a skein of some sock yarn from our shop.

Want to know what the question is? Here goes!

The original broadcast of the Charlie Brown Christmas included some brief animated sections which included the logo of the shows original sponsor. Who was that sponsor?

I look forward to your responses!

In addition, I am thinking of possibly continuing the Charlie Brown theme throughout this coming year, but wanted to get your thoughts. How many of you would be interested in the following...
